Needle felted cake toppers

I was asked to make a pair of elephant wedding cake toppers for a friend's wedding. I've never made any other animal than an owl so I was definitely a little hesitant but agreed I would try my best. I'll have to admit that I am in love with the way they turned out!

New needle felted owls, penguins, and a robot.

An overdue post on some needle felted friends I made during the beginning of the wedding planning frenzy that I never shared.

Only the gray tuxedo owl (right) is newly made. I am using the bride for my own wedding cake topper since she looks tropical and we are getting married in Maui (hooray!). I am only debating who the groom should be. This original black owl, or this gray tuxedo owl! Decisions, decisions...

I suspect he will have a female friend coming soon-ish.

I adore this penguin and his gigantic forehead! I really want to make his a female friend with a pink bow.

For a couple of days, I was really into androids because of a keychain I stole borrowed. I decided to felt an android...as you can see, it does not quite look like an android. If I separated the legs, it wouldn't be able to stand, and I wanted a standing android-but that failed. So now I have a green robot with no eyes. But, that will change real soon.

Now, I only keep a listing or two on Etsy and post a gallery up of available items for sale on my picasa.

These cute needle felted love birds is my first, ever, attempt to make my own wedding cake toppers! I made changes after this set, but I may continue to make one's like the small cute blue guy if the results are good and it actually sells. I've been so nervous about putting my items on Etsy and have put it off long enough.

My biggest fear, probably like everyone else selling for the first time, is that the hard work I put into each bird (hours and hours!) isn't taken into account with the price. However, I don't want to decrease the value of my blood sweat and tears (literally) invested in each bird! So, fingers crossed!

I'm slowly posting each bird and couple up, so check back often!

I'm very excited to share these photo's I've been working to get for my birds before starting up my etsy shop. Work in process: cake toppers

I have finally made progress on a set of cake toppers I've been wanting to make and I'm happy to say that they are mostly done! They both need a set of legs and the bride needs a veil, any maybe some lace around her body? We'll see...

Welcoming Madeline

Meet the new member of the group! Needle felting sure is an acquired hobby...it takes so long just to make one of these but when it's done, it's well worth the trouble. It's definitely going to be difficult to bid farewell to these birds! Hope someone will enjoy them as much as I do.

Wedding bells?

So this is how far I've gotten on my very first project. The goal was/is to make my own cake topper for my wedding cake after I fell in love with the first needle felted topper I stumbled across.

...and voile! My stab at my first pair of love birds for someone's cake topper. Their destiny and sole purpose is to make a future bride one step closer to their magical day.

Ideas

Some ideas sketched for needle felting. I love birds, and I love things in the round. Can't you tell? Will probably go in another direction that I have in mind, I can't tell you how excited I am to get all the ideas in my head in actual production!

On another note, how lovely is this Dorothy Draper inspired duvet set? I'm itching to buy it! But can't justify the cost with Eric.

Beginnings

I grew up with my neighbor whose mother was quite the artist. She dabbled in different mediums of art including painting, sewing, card making...etc. That was my very first introduction to art other than coloring with crayons inside the black lines. Fast forward to post college where I had concentrated in nothing but studying. My creative right brain was non-existent till I met Eric, and within a year I started reading wedding blogs, wedding bee to be exact. I read about weddings all day and created my own imageboard of my future wedding, all the way down to the specifics, cake toppers. At the time, I was obsessed with a bird theme wedding (love birds) and that’s when I came across the exquisite Ann Wood cake toppers. After more research into birds, I started noticing some random felted birds. First thought was…"what the heck is felting?!" I looked it up and still didn’t quite understand, but my inquisitive nature peeked through…onward! That’s when I stumbled on Lauren Alane’s felted cake toppers, and it was love at first sight. I just HAD to know this art medium and get my feet wet. After some email exchanges (she’s a darling!) I got the idea of this foreign art. She also referred me to Jenn Docherty, who she was inspired from (and I as well!). Then, I went crazy and bought a TON of wool and got started. Sadly this was in Dec 2009, and my first project was remaking her birds for fun because I loved them so much (of course with her permission—as long as I didn’t sell my imitation), and as of today, I only have one of the black birds with no feet! I do have to mention that another crafter that aided me during this time where I was trying to get a good grasp of how to make a successful figure is kitlane. Her work is so amazing!! So anyway, this weekend was the weekend, I started the coordinating bird and I do intend on finishing her! AND get started on my own line of somethings to sell! I'm feeling a little ambitious these days, and hope not to lose sight amidst all the crazy that is my life.

Soooo HANG TIGHT! ...and wish me a lot of luck to get a finished product out of my own design!
